Volunteer Profile

Volunteers really are the heart and soul of hospice and bring to this service the esssence of community through their love and caring.  On this page, we will profile our volunteers to give you a glimpse into the richness and diversity of the people who volunteer with Hospice.  All of our volunteers are valued for their incredible contributions to individuals, families and our community and we hope, over time to honour each one here.

SARA  CONROW: Volunteer in Kaslo

How did you come to be involved with hospice?

In the early 1990s I became Kaslo’s first trained hospice volunteer, long before Hospice in this area was officially formed.  Two nurses from Nelson saw the need for Hospice services and set up a hospice-training program in Nelson.  I signed up and enthusiastically attended.  It was another way to unfold my Self.

When my father died, long before this, his request for no medical intervention to prolong his life was disregarded. He was kept alive against his will. It was hard to bear the disregard of my dad’s wishes, and this prompted me, many years later, to become a hospice volunteer.

What inspires you?

I often sing or hum quietly to the patients. I believe it is important always to respect their wishes, desires, thoughts, questions and statements.  Listen and hear.  Be comfortable with quietness.

I believe we should be present when people are born – it is new and exciting – and when we die – we are embarking on our next adventure! Birth and death are both adventures, times of celebration.  It is a privilege to be there.

What are your other interests?

I am an Eckist – a member of the Eckankar religion, which celebrates the light and sound of God. I’ve been an Eckist for 30 years.  I do crafts. I’m a designated driver for people who need transport to medical appointments down the lake.  Basically, I’m a “people” person!
